Dhanak Fabric Lengths: Questions to Take to Your Tailor

A fabric length in a listing is useful, but it is not a complete cutting plan. The width, panel arrangement, borders and silhouette you want also belong in the conversation. Before ordering an unstitched Dhanak-labelled suit for a particular design, show the available information to your tailor. The aim is to confirm that the actual supplied pieces support your plan before cutting makes the decision difficult to reverse.

Collect the seller’s quantities accurately

Record each component separately and keep the units exactly as supplied. Note whether the shirt comes as one continuous piece or as separate front, back and sleeve sections. List borders and patches individually rather than treating them as additional plain cloth.

Ask for the width where it is not stated. If a photograph shows a wide silhouette, do not assume the supplied quantity necessarily supports that shape in every size or with every design change. Have the tailor assess your own requirements.

Bring a design brief, not only a picture

Write down the intended shirt length, sleeve style and trouser shape. Include any elements you want to preserve, such as a fixed hem border or a central motif. A reference image can show your preference, but it should sit beside these details rather than replace them.

For example, changing a straight shirt to a more open silhouette may require a different layout. Ask the tailor to explain whether that change works with the supplied panels. Do not accept a general fabric-name answer when the question concerns the particular cut and design.

Make the tailor’s questions visible

  • Is the supplied width sufficient for the intended sections?
  • Do any motifs need a particular direction or position?
  • Are the sleeves and front already defined by embroidery?
  • Will separate lining or additional cloth be needed?
  • What preparation does the actual fabric require before cutting?

Follow the garment or supplier instructions for preparation and ask for clarification where needed. Do not assume every unstitched material should receive the same washing or steaming treatment before tailoring.

Agree on changes before they happen

Suppose the original plan cannot preserve both a long shirt and a fixed border in the way you intended. Ask for the available options before authorising a compromise. You might change the length, select another silhouette or choose a different fabric package.

Record the agreed layout in a simple sketch or annotated photograph. The tailoring brief guide provides a structure for keeping decisions together, while border planning focuses on the decorative pieces.

Explore unstitched sets with your tailor’s information needs in mind. A clear quantity discussion is not about finding a universal number of metres; it is about matching one supplied set to one considered design and the person who will wear it.
